LabourLGB will soon be publishing our own response to the atrocious draft Conversion Practices bill. The link below takes you to the response from Gay Men’s Network. The bill uses the terrible abuses that were perpetrated against gay men and lesbians in the past in the UK – and indeed still are in numerous countries around the world – as a Trojan horse for getting trans self-ID into English law. It is clear to us that if this bill were to become law, it would impede gender non-conforming lesbian and gay young people from receiving vital support to explore their sexuality. We fear that it will result in the effective erasure of butch lesbians and feminine gay men, as no-one will dare suggest to them that they might not have been born in the wrong body, without fearing criminal conviction.
