Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo is one of the world’s leading infectious diseases specialists, whose career has transformed the prevention and treatment of HIV and sexually transmitted infections. A clinician-scientist known for rigorous, patient-centred research, she has led major studies on bacterial vaginosis, microbicides, HIV prevention strategies, and the sexual health of women — areas long underfunded and overlooked in medical research.
From 2023 to 2025, she became Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, one of the world’s foremost biomedical research agencies, overseeing vast portfolios in infectious disease, immunology, and global health. Her leadership builds on decades at the forefront of academic medicine, including directing the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and previously leading infectious diseases at the University of Washington.
