Feb 24 Dr Martin Gouterman was a pioneering physical chemist whose work transformed our understanding of molecular spectroscopy and the electronic structure of porphyrins. Best known for the “Gouterman four-orbital model,” he provided a clear theoretical explanation for the intense absorption bands seen in porphyrin compounds – molecules that lie at the heart of vital biological systems such as chlorophyll in photosynthesis and haem in haemoglobin.

His model elegantly accounted for the characteristic UV-visible spectra of these highly conjugated macrocycles, resolving longstanding questions about their electronic transitions. The framework he developed remains foundational in photochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, and materials science, influencing research on solar energy conversion, catalysis, and medical photodynamic therapy.

Beyond the laboratory, Gouterman was openly gay at a time when few scientists were. He spoke about the challenges he faced and supported greater inclusion in academia, contributing quietly but meaningfully to LGB visibility in science. As both a distinguished scholar and a mentor to generations of chemists, he left a legacy defined not only by intellectual brilliance but also by personal integrity and courage.
