Firstly, congratulations on your recent election as deputy leader of our party. We look forward to working with you to implement some of the changes you spoke about during your campaign.
We would greatly welcome the opportunity to meet you to discuss how the party engages on the issue of lesbian and gay rights following the Supreme Court ruling that the meaning of sex in the Equality Act refers to biological sex.
For us, as party members and individuals attracted to those of the same sex, the ruling was incredibly important. It validated our existence and acknowledged that any other interpretation, in effect, rendered the protected characteristic of sexual orientation as meaningless.
We know this is a divisive issue within the party, but we also know that the overwhelming majority of voters agree that a biological interpretation of sex is the only one that makes sense and ensures the integrity and rights of all.
Labour LGB formed in February 2025 because the existing organisation purporting to represent us in fact only represented a minority of views. Lesbians in particular but also gay men, were excluded from their narrative, even though they used our name. It doesn’t need to be like this. We can all live in harmony, side by side, respecting each other and without impinging each other’s rights. While in policy and law, the party agrees with this viewpoint, the messaging has been inconsistent and insufficiently clear and has thus failed to reach those most affected.
We believe you are uniquely positioned to help heal this rift and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how, as soon as possible.
